A persistent musty smell is one of the earliest indicators of hidden water damage. This odor comes from mold and mildew growing in damp areas behind walls, under flooring, or in crawl spaces. If you notice a musty smell that doesn't go away with cleaning, water may be accumulating somewhere you can't see.

Pay special attention to rooms that shouldn't smell damp -- closets, bedrooms, and hallways. These areas don't have water sources, so a musty smell there usually means water is traveling from elsewhere through walls or flooring.
